The Orland Park Ice Arena is Styczynski Walker & Associates' pioneering effort in ice skating sports
facilities. Many of the challenges associated with the development of this project revolved around its fast-track
design and construction schedule.
Although the buildable area of the site was limited by large setbacks, we were able to incorporate an official
NHL rink and an Olympic-size rink side by side. We were able to achieve this configuration by recessing the locker
rooms under the spectator stands, thereby utilizing space that would have been wasted otherwise.
The advantages of a completely column free space were achieved by using long span bar joists that were supported
on the center and exterior walls. Time and expense were saved by using insulated pre-cast concrete wall panels that
formed both an interior and exterior durable wall finish without the need for furring or drywall. A red, white and
blue color theme is used throughout, including the exterior façade, with the use of painted stripes recessed in the
We provided a handicap lift to allow free access to the grandstands. And, spacious skyboxes provide a private viewing
area for VIPs. The colorful entry sets the time for a fun-filled day on the ice.
