30th Anniversary

Styczynski Walker & Associates reached a new milestone; 30 years in business this month. Being a bit retrospective, it's amazing how many people's lives we have touched during that time, designing their homes, additions, and places of business. We hope we have provided a positive impact on their lives with the spaces we designed. As we move forward in this difficult economy, we continue to strive to provide excellent service for our clients. Our staff's combined experience and practical design skills are just a couple of reasons we continue to provide a presence in the residential and commercial markets, while the economy has taken a toll on the residential construction industry.

SWA Architects appreciates the referrals we continue to receive from past clients and industry associates. In these times of limited opportunities, we realize more than ever, how important our network of acquaintances and clients has become. We appreciate if you can pass along our name to your friends, relatives and business associates regarding any potential projects in their future. Also, please feel free to add their name to our email newsletter list.

Plan to join SWA on Saturday April 24, 2010 from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm for Naperville's 2010 Earth Day Fair Bring Green to Your Home at the North Central College Residential and Recreation Center, 440 South Brainard Street, Naperville, Illinois. The goal of the event is to help educate residents on how to save money by being eco-smart consumers. SWA Architects will be an exhibitor and will discuss what homeowners can do to "green" their existing home or to think "green" when planning to build a new home or an addition or renovation to an existing home. SWA has donated a door prize for an in-home consultation to help you plan a strategy to green your home. Join us to help celebrate Earth Day; we look forward to seeing you.

It's always a pleasure to see your work published in a national publication. That's the case with a recently completed Burr Ridge addition designed by SWA Architects. The kitchen of this home was recently featured on the cover of "Kitchen Trends", along with an article featuring numerous photos of this beautiful kitchen. The completed project was a great example of collaboration with the clients, SWA Architects, kitchen designer Gail Drury, interior designer Janie Petkus and builder Shawn McPartland.

The entire addition included a new great room addition, new kitchen and breakfast area, a new master bedroom suite, enlarged garage and an expansive mudroom to help keep the family organized. The design of the addition included some reconfiguration of existing spaces as well, while adding new areas to add functionality and opportunities for family gatherings and entertainment.

Going for Green: Part IV

While the construction continues on the Green Home in Wheaton, the process of green certification moves into the next phase. To this point, I have not talked much about the process a builder must go through with the National Association of Home Builders Green Building Program in order to get a home certified "green".

When a builder decides to go for certification, there are a number of steps that he/she must take to reach that goal. As I have mentioned in prior posts, a builder really should make this decision before any design of the home is put down on paper. Starting the process like this allows the builder to team with their architect to reach a common goal, while also allowing "green" elements to be integral parts of the home, not just added on after thoughts to an existing design. This also allows the builder and architect to work together to incorporate as many of the National Green Building Standards (NGBS) requirements as they see fit to reach the level of certification they are striving for.  Continue to full blog entry
